Long awaited changes to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

The day has finally arrived!

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) has become mandatory for major developments as of 12th February 2024. Major developments must now meet a minimum of 10% BNG as a legal requirement, which applies to all new planning applications from today. A planning condition will be included on planning consents that requires the pre-commencement submission and approval of a ‘Biodiversity Gain Plan’ to demonstrate how 10% BNG will be achieved. 10% BNG can be achieved by enhancing and creating on-site habitats; enhancing and creating habitats off-site; or, as a last resort, purchasing statutory biodiversity credits from the government. Combinations of approaches are permissible.

We bring extensive experience to support our developer clients in achieving their 10% BNG requirement and completing the Biodiversity Gain Plan. We work proactively with our clients and fellow professionals in project-design teams, including landscape architects, master planners and engineers, to maximise BNG delivery within development layouts. We have expert field ecologists for baseline assessments, including FISC Level 4 and 5 Botanists and Modular River Survey Accredited Ecologists. We have experienced assessors who can calculate the BNG position through the ‘Statutory Metric’, and demonstrate clearly how this would be achieved through the production of Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans.

We are also working closely with landowners to deliver BNG ‘Habitat Banks’ to help developers with off-site BNG delivery. Our services include assistance with habitat designs, baseline habitat assessments, ‘Statutory Metric’ calculations, development of habitat management and monitoring plans, and guidance on legal agreements and registering land on the Natural England National Register.

So welcome to the new world of mandatory BNG.
