New bat planning guidelines for Devon and Somerset

In 2010, Natural England published Planning Guidance for the South Hams Special Area of Conservation (SAC), which many of you will be aware of. This guidance identified large areas of South Devon as potentially important for greater horseshoe bats from the SAC and set out stringent bat survey and mitigation protocols for Local Planning Authorities to apply. These guidelines are currently being reviewed and changes are expected. Similar planning guidance for North Somerset and Mendips Bat SAC has also recently been published, which have implications for development in North Somerset, Sedgemoor and Mendip Districts. EAD Ecology has recently advised on a major residential application in North Somerset, which successfully applied this guidance. We have also worked on numerous applications within the South Hams SAC consultation zones and have successfully advised our clients on the mitigation of the associated constraints.
